And I know that's right! You know, I think back to when I was in college back in the 70s and I remember a friend of mine getting a degree in Computers. I thought, "What will he ever do with that?!" Little did I know---and he's kept it moving ever since!

Love the post! Hope it inspires some young folks.

I commend Chris on taking the time to empower our kids of tomorrow! It takes a humble and caring heart along with a lot of patience to do something like this. My nephew has a ministry devoting his time to children as well. Thanks for sharing.

But what if and this is just a what if please dont get worked up over this he faked his death in order draw more attention to himself? IF he faked his own death I would think the reason would be to cover the massive debt he was in. at least I think that will be the case...I doubt he would fake his own death for publicity..

Kevin, I always enjoy whatever you have to say. You are an inspiration to me and an education success story if ever I knew of one. Thanks for your words of encouragement.

Clearly this has stirred the pot. While I'll be the 1st to say that a child cannot really represent herself &, therefore, it is the parents' responsibility to do so ... there is such a thing as emotional abuse. Emotional abuse can be as damaging in its own way as physical abuse, & as debilitating--sometimes more so because it lasts long after the physical scars disappear. I've not seen this movie--as a few of you've said, I just don't know if I could at this point--but I've seen enough of the trailers to get a good idea, including a bit of this particular scene.

Precious needed to be taken c/o & her mother wasn't qualified for the job. Blatant but this is often the case, since Precious' mother was emotionally beaten by the man she was with. That wasn't love keeping her w/him. And when the mother herself is abused, while it's hard for those of us not in those shoes to understand, that woman appears to have been so downtrodden she was literally unable to do the right thing.

While I've thankfully never been in this particular situation, I was emotionally abused for almost all of my childhood & I can attest that while those around you SHOULD stand up & stop it ... sometimes they are hardly better off than the child.

Karen - so true that many want to take us backwards under various pretexts. Few things in our generation have made as much impact as opening the horizons of children by opening their access to schools beyond the narrow, and unequal, confines of their birth circumstances. As one who grew up poor, including government projects, but white I can say from experience that education is the key to changing one's circumstances in life. (Though it is not a given and is still more difficult for non-white human beings.)

Busing is definitely difficult - for everyone involved but, it is the best solution we have. It reminds me of the Winston Churchill quotation: "Democracy is the worst form of government...except for all the others." Someone please, give us a better solution. In the meantime, don't try to undermine a tool that is making a huge impact on issues of education, race and economic class.

Keep on calling us out to think about what is going on around us!!!

The sad reality is that art often mirrors life. There are so many sad tales going on in families that the dysfunction, in some instances, has become the new normal. Our perceptions of acceptable behavior is getting distorted. I did not see the movie yet but I will. I am a strong advocate against verbal abuse. You never see the marks but the blows lasts a lifetime.
